Sky Dragon and His Fantastical World
I am and have been mostly a nonfiction writer but the storytelling class has pushed me to write fiction. The teacher, Vincent Orduna, gave us an assignment to create a fantastical world. I have never done anything like that but decided to stretch and do what I could. The next assignment after that was to tell a story in that world.
I am going to share here the story I created.
Sky Dragon and His Fantastical World
If you know the right place to dive into the aquamarine waters near a beach and cave in the tropics, you can take a journey like none other. I can see that place in my mind’s eye and will describe it for you. It is a small area with yellowish colored sand and palm trees around above the beach. The lagoon is secluded and the waters more green than blue but I can see the mixture of colors so call it aquamarine.
Swim out from the shoreline only about six feet and turn left so you can see the top of the cave. When you see it dive down into the water and look for the hidden cave of wonders. You can’t miss it. Trust is needed. Dive down and look for the buried cave and swim into it. I promise you that once you get there you will be amazed at everything, including the fact that you can stand up and breathe inside it. Once there, you are out of the water.
This is Sky Dragon’s lair. If you have not met Sky Dragon, you will at some point. He is very young and he brings all his loot to this cave. He is a fun dragon to know and talk with and while he will not want you to take anything that is his, he will listen to you and perhaps let you look through all his prizes.
The first thing you will notice inside the cave is that you can stand up and you can breathe normally. Next you will notice that everything inside sparkles. That is the point. Sky Dragon, like his parents, love anything that sparkles and shines. At first it can be overwhelming but soon you will start somewhere looking at all the pretty colorful sparkling items. There are some things that look like they might be parts of a mermaid tail because they are translucent and look like rainbow colors. There is a kind of glass full of many colors and iridescent called dichroic, that I love to work with. Take your time and look at all the jewelry, stones, glass, and even different shells and rocks. Find a cozy place to sit and examine all that Sky Dragon is collecting.
Dalwyn, Talia, Erline and I were all inside looking at all that was in the cave. “Look at this!” said, Dalwyn and she showed us a necklace of beautiful sparkling-colored stones. She put it on to model it for us. Then Erline showed us some rings she found and she put them on her fingers. Talia was interested in learning more about Sky Dragon and was snooping around for clues. I told Talia that Sky Dragon is iridescent blue with black tips on his wings and feet and he loves to play and hide. I said to her: “call Sky Dragon in your mind and ask him to come back to his cave and see what happens.”
It was not long before we could hear Sky Dragon sloshing through the water to get to his cave. He is getting so big now that it is harder for him to get in and out of the cave, but there he was with his head sticking inside the cave opening and looking around at all of us. He only had his head and neck inside and the rest of him was still outside. He seemed to be looking at Talia and nodded his head toward her communicating telepathically, saying he would be happy to take her for a ride and answer her questions. Talia lit up and stepped out of the cave to step up on Sky Dragon’s leg and then grabbed hold of his neck and lifted her leg up and over his neck to get herself situated on his lower neck between the big protrusions and she was looking for something to hold onto. We were all watching and then began looking for something that could go around Sky Dragon’s neck and long enough that Talia could hold onto it. We finally found some bright orange rope that looked long enough. We experimented with how to get it around his neck and hand the ends to Talia —when Sky Dragon sneezed. Whew! Spew, a big gush of air and some droplets of fire came shooting out of his nose and all the jewels, and pretty things in the cave, jumped up. After his sneeze we went back to problem solving with the orange rope. I had a good idea but was too short to do it. I tried to describe it to the others when Sky Dragon communicated to me that he could help. He then lowered himself down and we were able to get the rope around his neck and tie it in such a way to not choke him. It was close to where Talia was sitting so we gave her the ends. It looked like it was going to work. She would be stable on Sky Dragon and would not fall off.
Sky Dragon is considered a teenager in dragon world and growing fast. He is and has been very shy around people and likes to hide. He discovered the cave and made it his lair before he became a teenager. He liked to go to the cave and hang out by himself. He felt comforted by all the shiny necklaces, rings, stones, belts, jewelry and even picture frames that he collected over the years. He was very curious when Dalwyn, Talia, Erline, and Sarah showed up. He knows Sarah as she was one of the people who would look for him when he was hiding. He did not feel shy around her and surprisingly not shy with Talia either. Maybe he was not shy with Talia because he liked her and knew she liked dragons.
Once Talia was sitting on Sky Dragon and was comfortable holding the ends of the orange rope she wrapped her hands around the ends of the rope and was ready to go. Sky Dragon asked her where she wanted to go but took off quickly, before Talia could become scared. He lifted up out of the water and they were airborne to parts as yet unknown. First Sky Dragon flew around the area so Talia could see it from the sky and have a view from above. Talia could see land that was verdant and green and some areas that looked barren. They flew over Seattle and the space needle, over the beaches and Elliot Bay, and then east toward the mountains. They flew over Snoqualmie and then on to Wenatchee and Lake Chelan. The snowy mountains were beautiful and very inviting. Further north over Winthrop they saw Sun Mountain with cross -country skiers and snow shoers on the mountain. Suddenly, Sky Dragon headed down to an area full of snow and no people. He knew not to land on Patterson lake so landed beside it. He telepathically asked Talia how she was enjoying the ride and scenery? She responded, in the same manner, telepathically, and told him she loved seeing the space needle, the beaches, Elliott bay and especially enjoying the snow here near Sun Mountain.
Sky Dragon was happy and began to do a dragon dance on the snow. He was making imprints with his feet all over the snow and had a nice rhythm going swaying and stomping. If any human tried to walk in this area they were sure to fall into the large holes his feet were making. At one point he flopped down on the snow and looked at Talia. She looked right into his eyes and saw that they sparkled like the gems and the jewelry in his lair. It was difficult to look away once she looked fully into his eyes. Then Sky Dragon asked her what else she wanted to do? Talia told Sky Dragon that she wanted to fly around Mount Rainier to see how it was doing. In the next moment they were once again airborne, and were flying west toward Mount Rainier.
When they were close enough to see it, Talia was in awe of it. Such a magnificent mountain. She could see the cloaked space ship inside the cloud cover. Sarah had shared with her that there were space brothers and sisters who come often to work with Mount Rainier to keep the mountain stable. The natives call Mount Rainier, T’Swak. As Sky Dragon flew around and over Mt Rainier, Talia could see the variety of looks the mountain had on all sides and she could even see inside the mountain from above. She and Sky Dragon both were enjoying what they were seeing. The snow up there was very thick and deep, there were places where it was grey and dark and other places where there was sun shining into it and it glistened. She could not directly see the space people in the ships but she could tell that they were there and taking measurements.
Sky Dragon told Talia in her mind that he needed to land soon as he was getting tired. They went back to the cave and Sky Dragon got down very low so that Talia could stand on his foreleg and get off. As Talia got off of Sky Dragon, she told him verbally and telepathically that she was so glad he took her for the ride and showed her the water, beaches, land, snow and Mt. Rainier. She patted his neck and thanked him and asked if they could remain friends. Sky Dragon nodded his head and once again his eyes sparkled and both he and Talia felt intense feelings inside themselves. They felt mutual admiration, friendship and love.
Sky Dragon was awakened from his nap by loud screams coming from the cave. He was sleeping just outside it but was able to put his head inside and see. Talia was inside and had also been taking a nap, when suddenly a shark swam inside. There had never been a shark near the cave before but something sent it there today and it had gotten caught on some netting inside and was screaming. Talia went over to see what was happening and saw the shark’s fin stuck inside some metal netting. She was able to get it loose and freed the shark, who was very grateful and smiled at Talia before swimming off into the sea.
Soon after, some dolphins who heard the screams came swimming to the cave to see if they could help. Talia explained to them what happened and they were happy the shark was freed. The dolphins then took Talia on a swim with them. It was a pod of adult dolphins and one teenager. The mother took Talia and they swam all together around in the lagoon and only a short way into the sea. It was fun and invigorating for Talia. When she returned she and Sky Dragon sat together and got to know each other better and came up with some games they could play together in the cave. Talia could be all the way inside but Sky Dragon could only have his head and neck inside. They began to problem solve and Talia suggested that Sky Dragon look for a new cave that was big enough for him. Sky Dragon asked Talia if she would come with him and help him look for the best cave in a place that would work for both of them so Talia could continue to befriend him and support him growing to full adulthood.
Artist Statement
In addition to Path with Art classes I have been taking a class with Public Works called Veteran Storytelling. It is really a storytelling class and not everyone is a veteran but I am.
I have been looking for the art forms that work best for me and found touch drawing, where I can draw with my hands on tissue paper over a board full of water mixable nontoxic oil paint that I roll out on the board. I also did a class with David Tovey where we told our story in part using materials and paper. I also took the Hot Shop for Heroes class at the Tacoma Museum of Glass and learned to blow glass. I like that very much but found that my small short body and age (83) do not lend themselves well to that form of art. I enjoyed the teachers and the process but it was too hard to continue. Following that I decided to learn glass fusion and was doing that at the Tacoma MOG until last week and when I learned that what I wanted to do was not feasible there. I believe they are going to point me where I can learn more glass fusion. I did make many pieces on my own including plates and some jewelry.
My two favorite forms of art that I can do regularly are writing and doing online puzzles of beautiful scenery. I will take a picture of one of the puzzles and leave it at the end of this.
